Satisfacer las necesidades emocionales de los niños pequeños es parecido al ejemplo de nutrir el árbol de nuez. Cuando se planta el árbol en el suelo, no se puede dejar solo; tal vez crezca, tal vez no. Aún si logra crecer el árbol, su fuerza depende de la atención que le proporciona el cultivador.
No solamente es importante cuidar de sus necesidades físicas tales como regarlo, pero es igualmente importante cómo se siente el cultivador acerca del árbol. ¿Realmente importa si este árbol echa raíces? ¿Se sentirá triste el cultivador si no crecen las raíces? ¿Se sentirá culpable si no toma acción en contra de los gusanillos que están comiendo sus hojas? El árbol responde a cómo lo trata el cultivador, tal como sus niños responderán a cómo los tratamos nosotros. Si al cultivador le importa su árbol, crecerá a ser grande y extendido. Si los padres tratan bien a su niño, él responderá con sentirse bien acerca de si mismo y frecuentemente hará cosas que les gustan y de las cuales aprueban.
